Oriza L Legrand is a French heritage brand originally established in 1720 by the Court Distiller and Perfumer to Louis XV, Fargeon Aîné. The name "Oriza" was inspired by the Latin name for rice, which was used in the house’s face and wig powders. Maison Oriza supplied not only the French court up to Napoleon III, but also the royal courts of Russia, Italy and England. In 1811 former Fargeon apprentice Louis Legrand assumed control, giving it the iconic name it still bears today. His successor, Antonin Raynaud, installed the first steam-powered perfume factory in France at Levallois-Perret, making the house a model of industrial and social innovation. The house was shuttered after the twin blows of the Great Depression and WWII, and was revived in 2012. Today, the house offers a carefully curated range of fragrances imaginatively reinterpreted from its early 20th century offerings. The bottles and packaging reflect their Gilded Age and Art Deco heritage.
