Australian spring arrives, bearing dazzling frocks of yellow blossoms to dress the bare golden wattle trees. Clouds of sweet honeyed fragrance, caught upon the breeze, carry an invitation inland, where a flock of cockatiels happily take up the celebration. Emerging from dusty nests, the birds are ready to preen and prance. On a wobbly stage of branches, vivid crests bop to the rhythm of their joyous songs. After a final encore, the flock takes flight. Alighting in a nearby field they share a delightful brunch, buzzing with the thrill of their stunning recital.

Zoologist Cockatiel exudes joy. A sunny burst of yellow acacia offers a friendly welcome. Dots of raspberry and tart rhubarb suggest a hint of mischief, like a pair of rosy cheeks beneath a golden plume. Finally, soft notes of musk and vanilla enfold the vibrant Cockatiel, like downy feathers cushioning the brashness of this cheeky bird.

Zoologist Cockatiel was formerly known as “Powder and Dust”, a perfume created by Sven Pritzkoleit, published under his own brand, SP Parfums. The creative director of the scent was Yana Lysenko. This perfume won the 2019 Arts and Olfaction Awards under the Artisan category. In 2020, Sven closed his perfume business and sold the formula of Powder and Dust to Zoologist to continue its legacy.

A vivid burst of green/fruity rhubarb and watery/rosy lychee sets the weekend mood. It’s pink sweatshirt day, and the scent matches the vibe. Witty, not cute — we’re not trying too hard, here. Sour cranberry cuts strawberry’s sweetness, and Champagne crispness is offset by white musk. You catch yourself in the mirror: “I’m good like this.”

Sparkling in it’s pure simplicity, evoking the sweet blonde texture of fresh sandalwood shavings and champagne. Sharp and generous rose tones that project confidently. Woody facets are sprinkled with frankincense and sweetened with the bright fruity nuances of red berries.

Andevalo was born under the blazing sun of western Andalusia. A land where cistus shrubs exude a thick, resinous gum saturated with heat and light. This extrait is built around a trio of labdanum extracts, expressing their full ambery depth. Strawberry CO₂ extract, along with raspberry and black cherry accords, bring a pulpy, sensual brightness, quickly absorbed by supple leather and mineral warmth. Enveloping dark woods and patchouli leave a dense and long-lasting trail of smoke and dark sweetness.

“Bain de minuit” is French for “skinny dipping”, and what could be more decadent than a midnight splash au natural in a giant vat of strawberries, cherries and vanilla? The initial fruity-tootiness gives way to a tough ‘n’ tropical accord of monoï oil and leather, with jasmine and praline singing the high and low harmonies.

The charming and playful dancer warms up before her debut. Talented and passionate she radiates confidence and anticipation. Deliciously, exciting and unexpected. Sweet almond and ripe cherries contrast with sandalwood and vanilla for a floral, sweet and woody intensity. 

The odd couple of strawberry and Thai oud work out their differences and decide to make a go of it. The initial assault of red berries mellows out into a vanilla almond heart. Herbaceous Thai oud maintains the structure, as well as the appealing weirdness. A gourmand with the Mabra DNA — always natural, always different. 

Gratia Aestiva is Latin for “summer grace”, and this extrait is an absolute abundance of sundrunk fruit. Punchy pineapple, melon and strawberry wave a big HELLO right out of the bottle, while passion fruit, with its tangy, grapefruit bite, tempers the sweetness with rawness. Indian jasmine adds floral fullness on a spiced bed of coriander and ambered woods. On the right side of too much.

Irisation or cloud iridescence is a colorful optical phenomenon that occurs in clouds lit by sun or moon disks behind. The pattern resembles a chaotic dance of a rainbow on a soap bubble.

This seems to be the logic of the perfume formula: iridescent jasmine with swirls of red strawberry, ochre praline, ambery vanilla, green bergamot, cool iononic rose and violet blackcurrant 

Le Réveil (the awakening) is an olfactory hallucination involving an Alpine mountain goat making a mess in a vat of strawberries and cream. Proving there’s no such thing as too much “too much”, this extrait pumps up the strawberry with waxy white chocolate and wine dregs, while amping ibex realness with oud, goat hair and animal notes. Remember, someone’s yuck can always be your yum.
