The following are some reasons why perfumes can become unavailable:

  1. Each year, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) issues ever-stricter safety and allergen regulations. This affects quite a few classic formulas as well as niche compositions, and sometimes brands have to discontinue a perfume if they are unable to reformulate.
  2. The brand decides to change the concentration. For example, an eau de parfum is reformulated as an extrait, effectively turning it into a different perfume.
  3. The brand ceases operating. The creative director passed away, got bored, started a new project, sold the business, etc.
  4. The brand cannot keep up with logistics and production demands, with disruptions for up to a year. If there is no regular production and availability schedule, it is not viable for a stockist to carry the brand.
  5. The brand changed the distribution model, eg from niche to duty free.

Bee - Zoologist - Bloom Perfumery

Perfumer: Cristiano Canali

A towering, skyscraper-sized beehive, dripping with honey. See the bee, be the bee. That’s you, waggling your cute black’n’yellow striped booty in a dance through a golden flow of labdanum and leathery orange blossom with powdery mini-explosions of mimosa, tonka and heliotrope. Buzz!

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

Bee suits a slow afternoon that stretches into company without losing its inward warmth. Think heavy knitwear and conversation at close quarters: candied orange and powdery flowers soften the honeyed density, while a leathery resinous undertone keeps the sweetness from feeling merely confectionery.

How to wear

Start with one or two sprays in cool weather, allowing the honeyed, waxy composition room to unfold. A restrained application beneath clothing emphasizes its warm floral-resinous character; in warmer conditions, use less, as the dense sweetness may feel more enveloping.

Who it’s for

For lovers of honey, beeswax and substantial gourmands who want more than dessert-like sweetness. Bee rewards a taste for powdery florals, warm resins and leathery, animalic nuances, especially when richness and unusual texture matter more than crisp freshness.

Release year

2019

The nose

Cristiano Canali composed Bee, bringing a fascination with beeswax to its richly textured floral-gourmand structure. Affiliated with Argeville at the time of its creation, he built a royal-jelly accord around beeswax and floral extracts, seeking the warmth and complexity of a living hive rather than straightforward sugary sweetness.

Collaborators

Zoologist founder Victor Wong helped shape the creative brief with Cristiano Canali. After their initial discussion of a Toad fragrance, Wong steered the project toward beeswax and proposed a journey from the bee’s perspective: leaving the hive, gathering nectar and returning home.

Zoologist’s story

Founded in Toronto by Victor Wong, Zoologist translates animals and their environments into unconventional perfumes. Its compositions explore habitat, behavior and texture rather than literal animal smells, embracing both beauty and strangeness. The house uses synthetic substitutes for animal-derived musks, though Bee contains beeswax and is not vegan.

Bee’s concept

Bee grew from Canali’s interest in beeswax and Wong’s idea of tracing a bee’s journey between hive and flowers. Canali focused on the queen bee, imagining her warm, buzzing enclosure and flight into a floral world. Beeswax absolute and floral extracts create the honey impression, giving the composition a hive-like atmosphere rather than simply the smell of a sweet ingredient.

Extra info

Bee was a finalist in the Independent category of the 2020 Art and Olfaction Awards. Despite its honey impression, the composition uses beeswax absolute and floral extracts rather than actual honey. Beeswax is a confirmed ingredient even though it is not separately named in the official note pyramid.
