With natural perfumes colour may and WILL vary from batch to batch.
For example, the current batch of Cuir de Russie is not as dark in colour as the previous run because the tea extract in the new batch is decolorized. This does NOT affect the aroma/effect at all.
A classic vintage chypre by design and by make Anna's Cuir de Russie is smoky, animalic and true to the early 20th century recipe.
The story of this smoky leather perfume style starts with Russian Cossacks' cavalry entering Paris to make sure the French army definetly got back home. Parisians were very much impressed by the Siberian warriors, their uniforms trimmed with beaver fur, the smoky leather of their boots (treated with tar for waterproof effect) and had a bit of an olfactive cultural shock.
French being French, they noted the whole expereince in a perfume style called Cuir de Russie. Coco Chanel later brought this style back into the spotlight to reflect on her affair with a Russian grand duke Dmitri Pavlovich (Tsar Nicholas II’s cousin).

Anna Zworykina’s blends are olfactive smellscapes (but neither aromatherapy, nor ‘spray-and-go’ perfumes). Her blends are sensory experiences, closer to works of art created in the scented plane (rather than, say, visual or audio).
Certain essential oils and absolutes that are used in her 100% natural perfumes may potentially cause allergies in some people. Please spray Anna Zworykina’s blends on fabric (on sleeves, scarves, etc.). This said, Anna Zworykina has acquired a huge fan base over many years and people interacted with her blends for quite a while now. We are not aware of any reports of any skin reactions so far.
However, Anna advises that those who are prone to allergic reactions, pregnant and nursing women, as well as people with chronic illnesses to be extra careful. Before trying natural blends, study the list of ingredients and consult with a doctor if you are not sure or a had a history of allergies. If you do decide to put these blends on your skin (unable to resist the temptation) always test the blend on the inside part of your elbow first and wait.
Do not spray these blends liberally as a cloud in the way you would spray a conventional perfume. Anna’s smellscapes need to be… carefully applied and experienced. Be mindful that some oils can also make your skin hyper-sensitive to UV.
All about this fragrance
Vibe check
This is a fragrance for close quarters and deliberate movement, where its smoky leather can unfold without being flattened by noise or heat. It suits a wearer who wants a stern, textured presence: dry tar, dark smoke and animalic warmth that reads as composed rather than loud.
How to wear
Best worn in cool to cold weather, when its birch tar, smoke and leather facets can breathe without becoming harsh. Apply sparingly; one or two sprays on fabric or clothing is ideal, since the brand’s natural blends are meant to be experienced gradually and can project strongly. On skin it will feel warmer and more animalic, while on fabric the smoky chypre structure stays clearer and longer-lasting.
Who it’s for
For lovers of classic leather perfumes, smoky chypres and old-school natural compositions with a rugged, historical feel. It will appeal to people who enjoy tar, castoreum, moss, tobacco and woods, and who prefer texture, depth and a slightly uncompromising edge over smooth modernity.

The nose
Anna Zworykina. Zworykina is an independent Russian perfumer known for conceptual, narrative-driven compositions built from natural materials. Her style often treats fragrance as an art form rather than a trend-led accessory, and Cuir de Russie is one of her clearest statements: a leather study shaped around birch tar, smoke and animalic depth. As the founder and in-house perfumer of Anna Zworykina Perfumes, she works in a distinctly artisanal register, favouring structure, texture and historical references over polish for its own sake. In Cuir de Russie, that approach gives the classic Russian leather theme a tactile, old-school intensity, with chypre brightness and a smoky, tarry core.
Anna Zworykina’s story
Anna Zworykina Perfumes is an independent Russian natural-perfumery house built around narrative compositions and 100% natural aromatic materials. Its fragrances are conceived as olfactory artworks, with each collection exploring a specific theme or material family through a highly crafted, artisanal lens.
Cuir de Russie’s concept
Cuir de Russie is Zworykina’s natural interpretation of the historic Russian leather theme, built around the idea of yuft leather treated with birch tar. The fragrance opens with a bright chypre lift, moves into a floral heart wrapped in smoke, and settles into a dark, mossy leather base, evoking the raw materiality of old Russian boots, tar and tobacco rather than polished fashion leather.
Extra info
Cuir de Russie means “Russian Leather,” and Zworykina’s version is part of her Leather collection. The fragrance is notable for being entirely natural and for using birch tar as the central material in a historically inspired leather style. The brand also notes that batch colour may vary because of natural ingredients, without affecting the scent.
