Hors-Piste - Bastille - Bloom Perfumery

Perfumer: Domitille Michalon-Bertier (also the nose behind Flowerbomb by the way).

Hors-Piste (as in skiing off-piste or driving off-road) is the modern and impertinent cologne for those who like to surprise. First comes the freshness of the Italian tangerine, then the bitterness of the mate tea. Finally, the brightness of juniper, the main ingredient of the gin and tonic that Hors-Piste recreates to perfection.

Its formula is quite minimalist: it contains 43 ingredients. A classic perfume can contain up to 300 ingredients.

Natural ingredients corresponding to the notes (95%):

Virginia cedar (juniperus virginiana oil)
Texas cedar (juniperus mexicana oil)
Lemon (lemon peel oil)
Juniper (juniperus communis fruit oil)

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

This is the scent of someone moving through the city with an easy, slightly irreverent confidence: crisp shirt, open notebook, no need to overstate the point. Its green citrus brightness keeps the mood alert and dry, while the mate and juniper give it a cool, conversational edge.

How to wear

Best in mild to warm weather, where its citrus and green facets can stay bright without becoming sharp. Wear it with a light hand: two to four sprays are enough for a clean, airy trail that sits close at first, then turns smoother and more mineral on skin as the ambroxan comes forward.

Who it’s for

For wearers who like minimalist, modern scents with a dry citrus profile and a green, slightly bitter twist. It suits people drawn to understated niche perfumery, gin-like freshness and compositions that feel clean but not bland.

The nose

Domitille Michalon-Bertier is an IFF perfumer known for polished, contemporary compositions that balance clarity with character. Her work often moves between luminous florals, gourmand textures and streamlined modern colognes, with a deft hand for making familiar materials feel sharp and current. For Bastille’s Hors-Piste, she leans into that precision: citrus, juniper and mate are arranged with a minimalist touch, giving the fragrance its brisk, off-road energy. The result is a fragrance that feels deliberately pared back, but still full of movement and personality.

Collaborators

Bastille’s founders, Marie-Hortense Varin and Anne Bouvelle, shaped the house’s transparent, natural brief and the broader creative direction behind the launch collection, giving the perfumer a framework built around freedom, risk and ingredient disclosure.

Bastille’s story

Bastille builds its identity around transparency, naturalness and creative freedom. The house is known for fully disclosed formulas, a high proportion of natural ingredients, vegan and cruelty-free standards, and a French-made approach that puts raw materials and sustainability ahead of glossy excess.

Hors-Piste’s concept

Hors-Piste was created as part of Bastille’s debut collection, with a concept built around risk, altitude and stepping outside the expected path. The name itself suggests skiing off-piste or driving off-road, and the scent translates that idea into a brisk, modern cologne with citrus freshness, bitter mate and a juniper-led finish that recalls a gin and tonic.

Extra info

Hors-Piste is part of Bastille’s first fragrance lineup and is built around a notably short formula for a fine fragrance, with full ingredient transparency. The name refers to going off-piste or off-road, matching the scent’s slightly rebellious, exploratory tone.
