The following are some reasons why perfumes can become unavailable:

  1. Each year, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) issues ever-stricter safety and allergen regulations. This affects quite a few classic formulas as well as niche compositions, and sometimes brands have to discontinue a perfume if they are unable to reformulate.
  2. The brand decides to change the concentration. For example, an eau de parfum is reformulated as an extrait, effectively turning it into a different perfume.
  3. The brand ceases operating. The creative director passed away, got bored, started a new project, sold the business, etc.
  4. The brand cannot keep up with logistics and production demands, with disruptions for up to a year. If there is no regular production and availability schedule, it is not viable for a stockist to carry the brand.
  5. The brand changed the distribution model, eg from niche to duty free.

Macchia (Discontinued) - Maqueda - Bloom Perfumery

A bumblebee’s flight across a Mediterranean scrub coastline —  a high-speed buzz through the sun-baked hay smell of immortelle, the sea salt sweat of working horses, the leather of their tack, the fennel and thyme of the hills.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

This is a scent for close, active spaces where heat, salt and movement are part of the atmosphere. It feels most convincing in the open air, with the body in motion and the dry Mediterranean landscape still lingering on skin and clothes.

How to wear

Best worn with a light hand in warm weather, where its green, salty facets can open without becoming too forceful. One or two sprays are enough to project clearly; on skin it should feel brisk and textured, with the woody-herbal base becoming more apparent as the day warms.

Who it’s for

For wearers who like green aromatics with a marine edge and a dry, rugged Mediterranean profile. It suits those drawn to unusual, conceptual scents that feel natural, salty and slightly wild rather than polished or sweet.

Maqueda’s story

Maqueda is an independent Italian house that treats perfume as a philosophical, almost alchemical practice. Its compositions lean conceptual and raw, using scent to explore memory, place, ritual and transformation rather than polished convention.

Macchia (Discontinued)’s concept

Macchia is built around the idea of olfactory acceleration: a bumblebee or hornet crossing Mediterranean scrub at speed, carrying the smell of wild fennel, thyme, rosemary, sage and helichrysum on salt air. The image is coastal, sun-baked and kinetic, ending in a ripe, almost refreshing burst that keeps the composition moving.

Extra info

Macchia is an extrait de parfum in Maqueda’s conceptual line and is described as a sweet-green composition. It is listed as a 50 ml spray and appears to be discontinued.
