Ormonde Man
Ormonde Man, a most sophisticated fragrance, despite its unconventional ingredients. Complex and full of character, sultry and mystical, the fragrance exudes soft woody notes, but it is the infusion of Oudh oil, the world’s most prized essence since time immemorial, that sets it apart, elevating the scent to one of true distinction.
All about this fragrance
Vibe check
A low-voiced conversation after the room has begun to empty: aromatic spice lends alertness, while black hemlock and soft woods give the scent a darker, more private register. Its character suits a measured presence—composed, but not entirely conventional.
How to wear
Start with one or two sprays on skin, allowing the aromatic opening to settle into the woods before adding more. Mild to cool weather is a natural fit for this spicy, woody composition; in warmer conditions, a lighter application keeps its darker oud-and-hemlock character in proportion.
Who it’s for
For those drawn to aromatic woods with a darker edge, rather than overt sweetness or bright citrus. It offers an unconventional route into oud, framed by cardamom, coriander and soft sandalwood, and will appeal to anyone who enjoys complexity without an ornamental style.
Release year
2004
The nose
Geza Schoen composed Ormonde Man under Linda Pilkington’s creative direction. Known for Escentric Molecules and his exploration of individual aroma materials, Schoen often combines clarity of structure with unexpected textures. Here, that approach takes a more layered form, bringing aromatic spice, black hemlock and oud into a distinctive woody composition.
Collaborators
Linda Pilkington shaped the creative vision and ingredient direction, supplying ideas that Geza Schoen translated into the formula. Her exploration of oud and the house’s established black-hemlock signature provided the conceptual foundation for Ormonde Man.
Ormonde Jayne’s story
Ormonde Jayne brings together British craftsmanship, French perfumery traditions and ingredients discovered through travel, particularly in Asia. Founded by Linda Pilkington, the house favours distinctive materials and carefully structured compositions, with production in its own London laboratory and a quality-first approach to creation.
Ormonde Man’s concept
Ormonde Man extended the black-hemlock signature of Ormonde Woman into a composition centred on oud. Pilkington’s inspiration began with smelling oud in an attar; her subsequent travels took her to Laos in search of agar trees and to Bangkok to observe steam distillation. The resulting fragrance places oud within an aromatic, softly woody framework.
Extra info
Ormonde Man received a five-star rating in Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez’s Perfumes: The A–Z Guide and was included in their selection of one hundred classics. Its gendered name was retained alongside Ormonde Woman because both were already established, even as the house moved towards a gender-free approach.
