The following are some reasons why perfumes can become unavailable:

  1. Each year, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) issues ever-stricter safety and allergen regulations. This affects quite a few classic formulas as well as niche compositions, and sometimes brands have to discontinue a perfume if they are unable to reformulate.
  2. The brand decides to change the concentration. For example, an eau de parfum is reformulated as an extrait, effectively turning it into a different perfume.
  3. The brand ceases operating. The creative director passed away, got bored, started a new project, sold the business, etc.
  4. The brand cannot keep up with logistics and production demands, with disruptions for up to a year. If there is no regular production and availability schedule, it is not viable for a stockist to carry the brand.
  5. The brand changed the distribution model, eg from niche to duty free.

South (Discontinued) - Mendittorosa - Bloom Perfumery

South is one of the formulas in the Mendittorosa’s North-South duo. The duality is a hint at the contrasting nature of the formulas (the interplay of hot\cool and light\dark notes). Also South is a reference to the south of Europe. There’s a hint to the particular location in a set of coordinates hidden at the back of the metal tag that comes with the bottle. Finally, South is a reference to good childhood memories, it’s a fantasy rather than a real location. It smells of warm, freshly-baked bread, white linen sheets dried in the sun, the pure scent of Marseille soap and you can dream up your own set of feel-good associations.

The contrast comes from the dark and dry theme of warm bread crust, sharp freshness of linen and tender citruses and flowers as wells as the sentimental flowing softness of sandalwood.

The Sniff on Mendittorosa's South:

"In fairness, we had to try this a few times to fully understand the transition of the notes and the way the scent flows, but now that we have, it’s really fun to wear. There’s a yeasty, slightly fermented, slightly sour and slightly booze concoction here. It made us think of those summer puddings which are layers of pressed bread and berries served with lashings of cream. The bread accord adds this warm homeliness to the fruit and an increasingly floral backdrop becomes more and more apparent as the scent wears on. At times it evoked the vibe of a homebrewed ale, in a very pleasant and almost languid way; it has that sense of a good thing taking time to brew about it."

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

This is a scent for close, unhurried company, when the room is bright but softened by fabric, air and memory. It reads like freshly baked bread cooling on a kitchen table, with a clean linen trace that keeps the warmth from becoming heavy.

How to wear

Best in mild to warm weather, where its bread accord and sandalwood can breathe without turning dense. Apply lightly to pulse points or clothing for a soft, steady trail; on skin it feels more intimate and creamy, while in air the dry, clean facets come forward first.

Who it’s for

For wearers who like unusual gourmands that stay restrained, dry and polished rather than sugary. It will appeal to those drawn to woody textures, clean musks, bread-like accords and fragrances that feel nostalgic, artisanal and quietly offbeat.

Release year

2013

The nose

No named perfumer is publicly credited for South. The fragrance is shaped through Stefania Squeglia’s concept-led approach, where each composition begins as a philosophical idea before being translated by the creative team into scent. That method fits Mendittorosa’s wider way of working: less about a signature perfumer style than about an authored atmosphere. South reflects that artisanal, narrative-driven model, with its unusual bread-and-wood structure and its gentle movement from freshness into warmth.

Collaborators

Stefania Squeglia developed the concept and creative direction for South, building the fragrance from her idea of a southern, memory-laced fantasy before working with the perfumery team to shape the final formula. The house also treats its artists and artisans as part of the creation process, extending the perfume’s identity into its handmade presentation.

Mendittorosa’s story

Mendittorosa treats perfumery as an artistic and philosophical practice, turning memories, beliefs and sensations into intimate scented objects. The house is known for handmade presentation, natural-minded compositions and a talismanic, deeply personal aesthetic rather than marketing-led releases.

South (Discontinued)’s concept

South is part of Mendittorosa’s North-South duo, launched in 2013 as a study in contrast: hot and cool, light and dark, memory and place. The brand frames it as a southern European fantasy rather than a literal destination, with imagery of warm bread, sun-dried linen and Marseille soap, all softened by sandalwood.

Extra info

South belongs to Mendittorosa’s The Duo collection and is presented with the house’s signature handcrafted wooden box. The bottle’s metal tag hides coordinates on the back, a small detail that reinforces the fragrance’s idea of a secret southern place.
