Perfumer: Pascal Gaurin

Before we had modern synthetic musks, perfumers had to rely on a few animalic materials to give perfume formulas structure, longevity and artistic dimension. For example, the original 1920s formulation of Chanel No 5 had more than half its formula dedicated to deer musk, civet and castoreum hiding beneath jasmine and aldehydes.

It’s now possible to produce molecules identical to these animal secretions in a lab, recreating accurate accords of vintage base notes.

Nowadays, the task of providing the structure has mostly been given to clean macrocytic musks, and replicas of animalic materials are mostly used for their odor profile: warm, leathery, sensual and retro.

Musk Deer is an amazing modern reconstruction of the aroma of musk of the Siberian deer. It’s flowing, radiant and voluminous, alluring but elusive, just like the animals themselves.

Zoologist do not use animal products, and the deer musk note in this perfume is a clever accord.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

This suits close-range wear in a quiet, self-possessed setting, where the scent can read as skin-warm and slightly untamed rather than loud. It feels made for moments when you want a polished presence with a faint animal shadow underneath.

How to wear

Best in cool weather, especially autumn and winter, where its musks and woods can bloom without turning heavy. Apply sparingly: one to three sprays is enough for a concentrated extrait, giving a soft leathery aura on skin and a more radiant, airy trail in colder air.

Who it’s for

For wearers who like musky, woody fragrances with a leathery edge and a touch of vintage animalic character. It will appeal to those who enjoy sensual but restrained compositions, especially if they prefer texture, warmth and subtle oddity over obvious sweetness.

The nose

Pascal Gaurin is a versatile modern perfumer whose work moves easily between polished designer compositions and more characterful niche briefs. He is known for a supple, textural style that can make musks, woods and florals feel vivid and wearable rather than abstract. His portfolio includes Gold Knight, CK2, Rouge Malachite and work for Henry Rose, and Musk Deer fits his strength with smooth structure and sensual materials. Here he shapes Zoologist’s animalic idea into something refined and atmospheric, using musk as a frame for woods, spice and floral warmth rather than a blunt effect.

Zoologist’s story

Zoologist builds fragrances around the personalities, habitats and instincts of animals, turning natural history into imaginative perfumery. The house is known for bold concepts, independent perfumers and a playful but serious approach to composition, with an emphasis on ethical materials and creative freedom.

Musk Deer’s concept

Musk Deer was conceived as a modern reconstruction of Siberian musk deer scent, inspired by the animal’s mating secretions and the harsh forest environment around it. Zoologist translates that idea without animal ingredients, using a synthetic musk accord with woods and florals to suggest something warm, elusive and alive.

Extra info

Musk Deer is a 2020 Zoologist release in extrait concentration, and it is fully animal-free despite its name. The fragrance was created as a clever accord rather than a literal animal-derived musk, aligning with the house’s ethical approach.
