The same way in which Martin goes to a sight and rearranges what nature left there into an installation, the perfumer rearranged some molecules and materials to put the beauty of a natural material into focus.
Also Martin aims to let his structures be absorbed back into natural chaos. Perfume evaporates into the environment in a similar fashion, beautiful but transient.
In Vanilla Shot all of the focus is on vanilla (natural, dark and balsamic). The concept of the perfume is inspired by a photo of a piece of Martin Hill's land art shot at dreamy dusk (below). The twigs used in the structure balanced over the lake are reminiscent of vanilla beans. The installation transcends two planes - liquid and ether and in the perfume vanilla spans the sweet and bitter corners of the scented universe. Vanilla Shot is not an ordinary sweet gourmand. In this perfume all nuances of natural vanilla get proper attention: balsamic, fruity, spicy, sweet and even leathery.

As afternoon fades, a wool coat carries the warmth of vanilla and dried fruit into the cold air. Beneath that sweetness, myrrh and a leathery edge lend a more reserved presence: comfortable at close quarters, but far removed from the cheerful register of a dessert gourmand.
How to wear
Its dark vanilla and resinous profile makes a natural choice for cool autumn and winter weather. Start with one or two sprays on the torso or forearms to keep the sweetness measured. Warm skin can bring the richer facets forward; in heated rooms, a lighter application lets the spice and balsamic detail remain distinct.

Bertrand Duchaufour is known for intricate compositions that balance spices, incense, woods and unexpected contrasts. His work includes L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Timbuktu and Dzongkha, and Comme des Garçons’ Avignon. In Vanilla Shot, he explores vanilla beyond its familiar sweetness, bringing its balsamic, fruity and leathery facets into focus.
Collaborators
Photographer and land artist Martin Hill supplied the visual inspiration: a wooden arch suspended above Lake Wānaka, whose slender forms suggested vanilla beans. Olfactive Studio founder Céline Verleure selected the photographs for the inaugural Sepia trio, establishing the visual framework that Duchaufour translated into fragrance.
Olfactive Studio’s story
Olfactive Studio brings contemporary photography into the perfume-making process. Founded by Céline Verleure, the house gives perfumers freedom to interpret an image’s atmosphere and emotional content rather than follow a conventional brief. Its fragrances connect visual impressions with scent, memory and texture.
Vanilla Shot’s concept
Vanilla Shot was created for the inaugural Sepia trio alongside Leather Shot and Chypre Shot. Its starting point was Martin Hill’s land-art arch above Lake Wānaka, built from sculpted wood joined with flax threads. The bean-like wooden forms prompted a study of natural vanilla, spanning sweetness and bitterness, while the temporary installation echoed perfume’s gradual disappearance into the air.
